As the domestic economy rebounds with the easing of lockdown restrictions, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) handled 413,737 twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) in November, clocking a growth of 7.61 per cent over the same month last year. The overall traffic including containers handled at JNPT during November grew 9.04 per cent to 5.70 million tons from the 5.22 million tonnes in November 2019. The total traffic in November includes 0.59 million tons of bulk cargo compared to 0.55 million tons in the same month last year. The average monthly terminal handling time of trains improved to 4:28 hours in November from 4:48 hours in October and 6:18 hours in September. The average monthly turn-around time of trains (from placement to removal of trains) has reduced to 9:08 hours in November from 9:45 hours in October and 13:34 hours in September. The newly opened Centralised Parking Plaza at JNPT handled 43,619 tractor trailers in November which carried 68,909 TEUs. “JNPT will continue to support the country’s economic growth and perform its duties to maintain the growth trajectory of the port sector. The growth in cargo handling volumes in November indicate recovery and these trends will continue into the last quarter of the present financial year,” said, Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT. Despite the few ups and downs, JNPT has managed to keep the operations going on the back of improvements in operational efficiency and enhancements in cargo handling capacity to enable seamless movement of trade and be the port of choice for the EXIM community, Sethi said. The upcoming FWC-2018 is set to showcase as an important platform for the fast-changing landscape of the freight forwarding, transport and logistics industry, feels AV Vijaykumar, Chairman, FFFAI. He said, “The dynamics of international freight forwarding, transport and logistics industry is rapidly changing. Conventional methods are replaced by process-driven procedures and system enabled practices. Adopting and being adept with this paradigm shift is a challenge for the industry. FFFAI is focusing on the members to be conversant with both domestic and global changes and challenges.” An event of this magnitude needs complete cooperation and coordination from a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including the government and the ministries.

At the FFFAI convention, Stanley Lim, Chairman, FIATA Congress Committee & Past President FIATA, expressed the need of logistics cost to be cut down. He said, “No matter in which industry you are, you need logistics and in logistics we are talking about from farm to fork and the number of steps and the cost involved. Moreover, for globalisation one needs to involve all government agencies in one platform to facilitate trade. Hence, logistics cost needs to be cut down to make country’s import and export competitive. Once the number of steps will get cut down, security will be enhanced and there will be less human error.”

The FFFAI convention held in Kochi, saw eminent industry persons come and deliberate on crucial elements of the logistics sector. Highlighting the same, Samir J Shah, Chairman, FFFAI, said, “We are working on three important issues. One of the most important issues we are targeting is skill; we understand with technology, domain knowledge of the broker is going to become important. Secondly, our focus is on gender equalisation and thirdly, we are creating a platform where FFFAI member can adopt the changes that are coming in the future. The Indian custom broker is capable of doing everything. Hence, any importer or exporter does not need to go to anybody else; the entire supply chain will be looked after by them.”

The 23rd convention of the Federation of Freight Forwarders Association in India (FFFAI) was inaugurated on January 19, 2017, in the august presence of Venkatesh, Eminent Economist, William Demoor, Chief of Cabinet of Chairman, Port of Antwerp, Stanley Lim, Chairman, FIATA Congress Committee and Past President FIATA, V.J. Mathew, Legal Advisor to the Government of Kerala, Senior Advocate of High Court of Kerala, K.V. Thomas, PAC Chairman, MP, Erankulam, along with the logistics fraternity, in Kochi. The convention aims to build a platform for enhancing the logistics sector as a whole while highlighting necessary issues like skill development, supply chain, gender equalisation, among others.
