DANX Carousel has invested in aircraft manufacturer ELECTRON as the company looks to develop an electric freighter. The Electron 5 aircraft is designed to transport 500 kg of cargo around 500 km on a single battery charge and can achieve speeds of up to 300km per hour. “With its requirement for relatively short runways, the Electron 5 provides access to five times more European Union (EU) airports compared to larger freight aircraft used today, enabling cargo to be flown directly on the shortest point-to-point route and bypassing congested logistics hubs,” the two companies said in a press release. The aircraft is due to hit the market in 2027, with Carousel aiming to add them to their fleet within the next five years. DANX Carousel group chief solutions officer Lars Ryssel said, “The ability to launch and land closer to our pick-up and delivery points will cut down on journey lengths, allowing us to offer customers later cut-off times and better serve hard-to-reach areas. Moving away from the traditional hub-and-spoke distribution of air cargo to a point-to-point model means we can avoid congestion at busy airports. Based on our analysis, we believe that small planes are set to outperform conventional aircraft fuelled by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and hybrid aircraft in cost per kilogram, transit time, and carbon emissions.”

Rajiv Bansal, Secretary, MoCA while addressing the gathering at PHDCCI Global Aviation and Air Cargo Summit 9th edition said, “India at this point of time cannot afford to have widebody 777 freighter aircraft. Firstly, it is a costly business, each freighter cost over 2000 crores, secondly, India doesn’t have that much capacity or volumes to use widebody freighters to move cargo from one destination to another. During COVID, Indian airlines operated freighters or P2Fs which is fantastic, IndiGo has its own freighter, SpiceJet operated a few during pandemic. Vistara did well too. Otherwise in India, only narrow body freighters can be used effectively. India needs to have great financial muscle to pull this off the ground.” He added, ” Also, a lot of developments are happening in terms of developing dedicated freight corridors, trucking speed as gone up like from Delhi to Bombay, Delhi to Lucknow, Delhi to Kolkata, therefore turnaround time has reduced. Also, I am looking forward to having more electric aircraft. Blending of SAF will power Indian aircraft.”
